Al parecer el director Henri-Georges Clouzot (1907 - 1977) no era un tipo fácil, sea porque a pesar de su aportación al cine quedara un poco al margen de la nouvelle vague, sea por la precaria salud con la que creció, por las acusaciones (no sin algo de fundamento) de colaboracionista con los nazis durante la ocupación en Francia, o por todo eso y mucho más. A principios de los años 60s se embarcó en la empresa de rodar un sicodrama de guión propio sobre los celos titulado 'El Infierno' para el que contaba con la bella Romy Schneider, que se atrevía con argumentos cada vez más complicados, quizás para alejarse de la imagen angelical a la que quedó asociada por su interpretación como emperatriz Sissí. El proyecto parecía tomar cariz de magnífica empresa, pero la cosa se complicó... Entre otras cosas el actor protagonista Serge Reggiani enfermó gravemente con el rodaje bien avanzado, culpando de su malestar al director y el maltrato inflingido, e incluso el propio director sufrió un ataque al corazón. Como resultado la película quedó sin terminar. Años después la viuda de Clouzot vendió el guión a Claude Chabrol que la rodó con bastante menos acierto y la estrenó en 1994. Eso sí, la nueva versión de la película contaba con Emanuelle Béart en el esplendor de su belleza como protagonista.

Apparently film director Henri-Georges Clouzot (1907 - 1977) was not an easy guy, either because despite his contribution to cinema he remained a little outside of the nouvelle vague, or the precarious health in which he grew, or accusations (not without reason) of nazi collaborator, or because all that and more. In the early 60s he embarked on the business of filming a psychodrama about jealousy entitled 'L'Enfer' for which he happily hired beautiful Romy Schneider, ex-Empress Sissi, who by then dared to accept more complicated works in an attempt perhaps to get away from that angelic image with which she was inevitably associated. Everything arose as the advent of a great movie and a lucky shooting but things got complicated ... Among other niceties lead actor Serge Reggiani got seriously ill with the shooting quite advanced, accusing the wrath of the treatment recieved from the director as a cause of his sickness, and the director himself suffered a heart attack. As a result the film was left unfinished. Years later Clouzot's widow sold the script to Claude Chabrol that filmed it with less visual talent or risk and the new film was premiered in 1994. The new version of the film had Emanuelle Béart in the splendor of her beauty as the main character.
This documentary tells the ins and outs of the first shoot. Highly recommended.
